Tobacco and vanilla are both distinctly American crops. Vanilla from South and Central America, and Tobacco from North America. Cultivating either crop requires a labor of love. Tobacco leaves were once harvested by hand, and then painstakingly dried and cured, emitting their earthy dried hay aroma. An entire culture developed around Tobacco cultivation during the British settlement of North America. Cultivating tobacco was considered an art form, and the final product ended up in swanky smoking parlors from New York across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. Although we do not promote smoking tobacco these days, the scent of tobacco leaves still invites an appreciation of rustic earthy sun-dried leaves that only nature can produce.
